Café frappé, a drink that originated in the Balkans, is particularly popular in Cyprus and Greece. The recipe first appeared in Europe around the 19th century, but really took off during the Second World War. The Greek recipe is that of the classic iced coffee. Its preparation is also the simplest of all the existing variations.

  • Place the desired quantity of black coffee in a shaker;
  • Add ice cubes in proportion;
  • Add sugar to taste;
  • Close the shaker and shake until frothy. Pour into a glass and enjoy!

Cold Brew

Coffee lovers will certainly be seduced by the aromatic power of Cold Brew. However, unlike other recipes, this one requires a great deal of time in terms of preparation. Cold brew is based on coffee concentrate, i.e. cold-brewed coffee.

To make Cold Brew, you need to :

  • Crush coffee beans by hand, or blend them in a blender (this is easier);
  • Pour room-temperature water into a container. Note that for 100 g of coffee beans, you’ll need 500 ml of water;
  • Add the crushed beans to the water, then cover with a lid or tea towel and leave in the fridge for 24 to 48 hours.
  • Once this time has elapsed, filter the mixture to recover the remaining beans.

Drink the precious beverage.

NOTES

Coffee concentrate keeps very well. You can reuse it a week after preparation!

OUR TIPS

Finally, apart from the time needed to brew the beans, Cold Brew can be made in the same way as a traditional Greek iced coffee (with the coffee concentrate replacing the espresso). For an extra touch of indulgence, you can add milk, maple syrup or hot chocolate. However, the classic version is best enjoyed with ice cubes and a little sugar.

Iced latte recipe

For those who don’t like the bitter strength of a classic espresso, there’s a variation on the Greek café frappé: iced coffee with milk. It’s perfect for those with a sweet tooth and a fondness for cappuccino and hazelnut coffee.

To make a café frappé latte :

  • Place a short espresso (equivalent to a medium coffee cup) in your shaker and add 2 tablespoons of sugar;
  • Add ice cubes;
  • Pour in 4 tablespoons of milk. All types of milk can be used: cow’s milk, vegetable milk or condensed milk, for even more deliciousness;
  • Close your shaker and shake vigorously to obtain a smooth mixture.

Enjoy!

A quick tip for making iced coffee

Would you like to serve yourself an iced coffee as easily as a glass of water? Nothing could be simpler: just think ahead and turn your coffee into ice cubes :

  • Prepare coffee in advance
  • Fill an ice cube tray with hot or lukewarm espresso coffee;
  • Put the tray in the freezer until the coffee becomes solid.
  • If you wish, you can add sugar to your ice cubes before pouring the coffee into the tray.

You now have an ice-cold supply of coffee. This way, you can take only the ice cubes you need to make an excellent summer frappé. You can also sprinkle a little cocoa or milk on top before enjoying.
